• VAUXHALL 93000 - HB VIVA & EPIC CANADA
Image description

The Envoy name was first used in the Canadian market for a version of the F Type Victor Series 2 and sold through Chevrolet & Oldsmobile dealers while the Vauxhall version was sold though Pontiac & Buick dealers. The same applied to the FB Victor in 1962, but in 1964 the HA Viva joined the ranks and was sold as a Vauxhall and also through Chevrolet & Oldsmobile dealers as an Epic. It differed from the Vauxhall Viva HA by using the UK specification SL rear lights and grille. The two cars were quite a success and for a while it was the second bestselling imported car in Canada behind the VW Beetle. With the launch of the Vauxhall Viva HB in September 1966 it was only a matter of six months before it was launched in Canada, for the 1968 model year, as both a Vauxhall Viva and an Epic. Although there were minor trim differences to the cars sold in the UK & Europe the real difference for the Canadian models was the two different four headlamp front grille, body side mouldings and badging but not much else.

For the 1969 model year the two car ranges were expanded with the addition of a super luxury SL trim level which was almost identical to the UK SL but with front & rear seat belts as standard fitment. Two more engines were offered – the 70bhp 1159cc “90” was optional on all models and the 84bhp 1599cc ohc unit available on all Vivas except the Standard version. There was also a new 4 door Saloon in Deluxe & SL trim and a new 3 door Estate which was only available in Deluxe trim to choose from. All 1969 Epic & Viva models now came with wheel trim rings as well additional front & rear indicator repeater lights mounted just behind the bumpers and reversing lights to comply with new Canadian lighting regulations. Power assisted front disc brakes were now an option with the standard engine and standard on the "90" and 1600 versions.

For the 1970 model year there were some major changes to both Viva and Epic ranges in terms of engineering and marketing. The Vauxhall name was dropped largely because of the adverse reputation gained by the F Type & FC 101 Victors accute corrosion problems, the Epic name remained unchanged, the Viva was sold as the Viva from General Motors. The two ranges were now identical apart from the front grille. New emission regulations the base engine was now the previous "90" engine but producing 66bhp and still able to run on regular petrol, it was also no longer referred to as "90". The 1600 retained the same power output as before and was joined by the addition of the 112bhp twin carburettor 2000cc ohc engine for a new model - the Viva / Epic GT. Both ohc engines now required premium petrol. New lighting regulations meant the side repeater lights were increased in size, the front indicators were changed to those used on the yet to be launched HC Viva and the reversing lights were now mounted vertically next to main rear light units. Inside the GT the seating was new & unique to Canada, head restraints on all models along with a modified dashboard inroduced on the HB Viva in the UK in 1969. Whitwall 6.25 X 13 crossply tyres were now standard on Deluxe & SL models while the GT featured 165/70HR X 13 blackwall radials. Wheel trim rings were deleated from the Standard model, and for SL models there was the option of UK FD Ventora wheel tims and also for the first time a vinyl roof. The Estate could also be ordered with a factory roof rack with metal roof strips. One curious option was an electric fan heater for the rear window on saloon models when in the UK the HB Viva was available with a normal heated rear window. The automatic option was now the GM gearbox not the previous Borg Warner unit.
